Melbury, Hoath

This new family home sits alongside an existing property on the edge of a small conservation village in the Kent countryside. The design draws on the traditional oak-framed medieval architecture scattered through the surrounding villages. The jettied upper floors of historic structures are echoed in the design with cantilevered covered balconies. Exposed roof timbers pick up on the jettied timbers and rafters of old buildings. The combination of timber frame, render, black weatherboard and slate roof are traditional materials used in an innovative way to give a strong dynamic contemporary building that sits well in the conservation area.
